HAIRDRESSING SCISSORS

As a stylist, your hairdressing scissors are your most precious investment (apart from yourself, of course) and we understand how difficult it can be to find a company you can trust to sharpen them correctly and with care.

Here are some of our most FAQ's:

What sharpening equipment do you use?

We sharpen using the Hamaguri flat hone and Japanese whetstones, as well as a diamond wheel and polishing wheel where required (amongst other tools). Only very minimal metal is removed to preserve the scissor and create a super-sharp edge.

How can I get my scissors sharpened?

You have the following options:
  • book us to sharpen in your salon so your scissors never have to leave your sight (most popular)
  • take advantage of our 'while-u-wait' service, by appointment, at our premises in Rochford.  This takes on average 20-30 minutes (popular with mobile stylists)
  • or leave your scissors with us for a 24 hour turnaround and collect them the next day, so you wouldn't be without them for too long.

How often should they be sharpened?

We recommend having your scissor sharpened every 6-8 months if you use them regularly, perhaps sooner if you cut un-washed hair as the blades will blunt more quickly, possibly 3-4 months.  If you are not sure whether they require sharpening, try this test:

  1. Take a piece of single ply tissue paper, lay it down over an edge so it hangs freely
  2. Lightly spray it with water to dampen it
  3. Take your scissors and without using any sideways pressure, make a single cut in the tissue from the bottom edge upwards through the entire length of your scissor
  4. This cut will tell you how good the edges of your scissors are and will highlight dull areas and imperfections.  Looking at the cut, was it patchy in places, did it fold or chew the tissue or didn't it cut at all?
  5. Any result other than a perfectly neat, straight cut without catching, means your scissors require some attention.
